The Mob lost its stranglehold on the entire trucking industry because they were too cheap
to pony up an extra 200 grand. After Jimmy Hoffa vanished, the mob’s control
over the Teamsters union was absolute. They were using the pension fund as their personal
piggy bank, funding casinos and skimming millions. The Kansas City mob,
led by Nick Civella, even installed their guy, Roy Lee Williams, as the new Teamsters
president. But a storm was brewing. The government planned to deregulate trucking,
which would destroy the mob's power and cash flow. They had to stop it.
Their plan involved a key politician, Senator Howard Cannon, who could kill the bill.
