Living with pain can be difficult, and for many people with disabilities, opioids provide
important relief. However, safe use is essential. About 6.5% of people with disabilities
report an opioid use disorder, and roughly 52% have used opioids. Healthy People 2030
aims to reduce opioid addiction among people aged 12 and older in the U.S. If you’re prescribed
opioids, always follow your provider’s instructions. Take them only as directed — don’t
increase your dose or take them more often without medical advice. Never share your
medication with others, even if they’re in pain, since everyone’s
health needs differ. Opioid use can sometimes lead to dependence. If you or someone you know shows warning
