Did you know parts of New York City didn’t even exist until they were literally built
from trash and rubble? Over the past century, NYC has quietly expanded its land using landfill —
dumping debris into the water to create brand new ground. One of the biggest examples is Fresh
Kills on Staten Island — once the largest landfill in the entire world. At its height,
Fresh Kills was so big, it was visible from space — rising taller than the Statue
of Liberty. After the tragic events of September 11th, debris from Ground
Zero was brought here to be searched and processed. And just south of Manhattan,
Governors Island was also expanded using debris and fill, increasing its size
