Nørholm Enge Rich Fen Decline

Rich fen occurs in mires and meadows with high lime content and nutrient-poor soil,

where the groundwater table lies close to the surface, resulting in permanently saturated conditions.

Seepage areas may influence the flora, although they are not always present. These conditions

favour vegetation such as sedges and mosses, which are characteristic of rich fen.

Vegetation can develop through different stages of encroachment, but ideally remains open and sun exposed

(DCE, 2025). The Nørholm Enge area is classified as extreme rich

fen due to its limestone layer, a very rare nature type that has been in decline.

Nørholm Enge is notable because of the high limestone content in the soil and the presence
