Oath Over Heartbreak

I switched my patient's chart with my ex-husband's by accident. Realized it mid-surgery when the attending

called out his name. My hands froze over the incision. Three years since the divorce,

six months since he married my former best friend. Now I'm holding his life in my gloved

hands while she sits in the waiting room trusting me. The tumor's worse than imaging showed.

I could claim I didn't see the margin. One slip. No one would question my judgment.

But my oath echoes louder than my heartbreak. I closed him up perfectly. Saved the man who

destroyed me. Did I do the right thing or just prove I'm still his fool?
