The Ocoee Massacre “On this day, November 2nd, 1920, over 50 Members
of the African Americans were slaughtered in Florida by a white mob for trying to vote.”
It started with one man — Mose Norman, a Black farmer who showed up to cast his ballot in Ocoee,
Florida. He was turned away, beaten, and told to leave town.
But Mose came back — and that act of courage sparked a massacre. By nightfall,
hundreds of white men — armed and furious — stormed through Ocoee. They burned homes,
churches, and schools. They shot families as they fled into orange groves.
Those who survived never returned. Their land was stolen, their names erased. Historians believe
