That iconic yellow tin of Old Bay on your crabs? It has a
heartbreaking backstory most people don't know. In 1938 Germany, Jewish spice merchant
Gustav Brunn lived a peaceful life that was about to shatter. He was arrested
during the horrors of Kristallnacht and sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp. His wife paid
a massive sum for his release. They fled to America with only a spice grinder.
Arriving in Baltimore in 1939, Brunn started again, founding the Baltimore
Spice Company near the docks. He blended eighteen spices like celery salt and paprika
to create the perfect seasoning for local watermen. Named after the Old Bay Line
