Omaha Beach was heavily fortified with bunkers, machine gun nests, and artillery emplacements.
These defenses and obstacles were designed to impede landing craft. The Germans were
well-prepared. The weather on D-Day was poor, with rough seas and low visibility.
Many landing crafts suffered navigation issues, disembarking troops in the wrong areas. American forces encountered
fierce resistance upon landing, with high casualties reported. Around 2,400 American
soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing by day's end. The struggle for
Omaha Beach was particularly intense and disorganized. Many soldiers were killed before they
could even reach cover. Despite heavy losses, American troops secured Omaha Beach by
