Omaha Beach: The Ramp Drops

The ramp drops. Waves, bash the beach. High stakes—today on Omaha Beach. The

Higgins boat opens and half the Sherman tanks… just sink. This June 6th the water was

over 3 feet deep, The Sherman Tanks flip like stones. 28 of the 28 tanks vanish—only

2 crawl out. Some soldiers bail and drop back. The engineers sprint with

bangalore torpedoes. One charges a hedgehog, boom—clears a 10-foot path. Germans on the bluff open

up—every third brick is a bullet tracer. The soldiers hit the sea wall; destroyers USS Satterlee and

Thompson roar so close their shells kick sand on the soldiers. Then it clicks—this carnage cost 2,000 real

lives before lunch. The soldiers push up the gulley, one plants the flag, and the whole beach breathes
