Non-Arteritic AION (NAION): Caused by occlusion of the posterior ciliary arteries,
often in patients over 50 with a structurally crowded optic disc ("disc at risk") and
cardiovascular risk factors like hypertension or diabetes. o Features: Sudden, painless,
monocular vision loss, often noticed upon waking. The disc appears
swollen and hyperemic, frequently with splinter hemorrhages. The classic visual
field defect is an inferior altitudinal defect. There is no definitive treatment.
• Arteritic AION (AAION): This is an ocular emergency caused by Giant Cell Arteritis
(GCA), an inflammation of medium and large arteries. o GCA Symptoms:
