Spanish colonization didn't just change the Philippines, it completely erased its indigenous writing
system. Before 1521, Filipinos used Baybayin, a syllabic script where every character
represented a syllable. When the Spanish arrived, they systematically replaced it with
the Latin alphabet to spread Christianity and Spanish culture. Within a century, an entire generation
grew up unable to read their ancestors' writings. The irony is that Baybayin was actually
more suited to Filipino languages than the alphabet we use today. This is why modern
efforts to revive Baybayin face such challenges. An entire literary heritage was lost
because colonizers decided their system was superior. That's the hidden cost of colonization
