Pikeperch: Ultimate Night Predator

Pikeperch can see in near total darkness and that's exactly why they dominate European waters

at night. These predators have specialized eyes with a reflective layer that amplifies

available light, making them the ultimate low light hunters. They lurk in deep,

murky waters of rivers and lakes across Europe and Western Asia, preferring areas

with rocky bottoms and minimal vegetation. During daylight, they stay deep, but when darkness

falls, they move shallow to ambush prey. Their diet consists mainly of small

fish like roach, perch, and bream. Young zander start with insects and

zooplankton, but quickly graduate to fish once they reach just a few inches long.
