Pirate Science and Superstition In desperation, pirates created strange rituals
to summon rain. Some carved symbols into masts, believing they pleased the ocean gods.
Others tossed rum into the waves — an offering to Poseidon or Yemaya. A few ships carried
“rain charms”: bottles filled with sand, feathers, and coral tied near the helm.
Beneath the superstition, however, lay early science. Pirates learned that islands downwind
of storms held fresher springs and that birds flying inland meant water ahead. Their methods mixed
faith and observation, forming a rough kind of oceanography. They weren’t scholars, but they read the
