Before plantations, before coconut estates, before the Pomeroon was ever measured for its economic
value, it was Indigenous land. The history of the Pomeroon begins
with its first people, whose relationship with the river and forest shaped the region long before
colonial contact. For centuries, the Pomeroon was home primarily to Arawak (Lokono)
communities, with Kalinago (Carib) presence as well. These Indigenous peoples did not
settle randomly. Their villages were placed deliberately along the river and its creeks,
where fresh water, fertile soil, and forest resources met. The river was not
just transportation. It was spiritual, practical, and ancestral. It connected families,
