Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells There are two fundamental types of cells: prokaryotic and
eukaryotic. Prokaryotic cells: Lack internal membrane-bound organelles. Organisms are known
as prokaryotes. Bacteria (kingdom Prokaryota) are prokaryotes. Eukaryotic cells:
Have a prominent nucleus and numerous membrane-bound organelles. Organisms are known as eukaryotes.
Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia are eukaryotes.
Cell Size Most cells fall within a range of 1-100 μ
μm in diameter. Prokaryotic cells are smaller than eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells:
1-10 μ μm Eukaryotic cells: 10-100
