Resuscitating the Wrong Patient

The code alarm went off and I sprinted to room 304. My attending was already doing compressions

on the patient. I jumped in to help. After two rounds of epi, we got a pulse back.

Everyone exhaled. Then the patient's wife burst through the door screaming that wasn't her

husband. We all froze. Turns out the night shift had mixed up two patients

with similar names. We'd just resuscitated the wrong guy. The actual code was happening three

doors down. My attending's face went white. I ran to the other room but they'd

already called it. Time of death, 3:47 AM. The family was devastated. I stood there thinking

about how one mistake, one wrong room, cost someone their life. Would you report
