In ancient Rome, public bathhouses stayed open around the clock, serving as the original
community centers where citizens could bathe, socialize, exercise,
and even conduct business deals at three in the morning if they wanted. But here's the wild
part. These bathhouses had underfloor heating systems called hypocausts that were so advanced,
engineers today still study them. Slaves would tend massive furnaces that heated air
flowing beneath marble floors, creating different temperature zones throughout the complex.
