Rome’s Fear of Attila the Hun

“Rome called him the Scourge of God.” Attila the Hun forced emperors to pay him gold just to

avoid destruction. His armies struck without warning, burning cities and emptying entire

regions. Even Rome’s strongest armies failed to stop him. When Attila finally

invaded Italy, panic spread across the empire. He died suddenly before Rome could

fall — but the fear he created never disappeared. This is why Rome feared Attila more

than any enemy before him.
