Coral reefs cover less than 0.2% of the ocean but house 30% of all marine life.
That's like cramming the entire population of New York into a single city block. These underwater
cities are built by tiny animals called corals that team up with colorful algae in a perfect
partnership. But here's the problem. When ocean temperatures rise just 0.5 degrees above normal,
corals kick out their algae roommates in a panic response called bleaching. Without their algae,
corals turn ghostly white and start starving. It's like evicting the chef from your
restaurant during a food crisis. Since the 1980s, 19% of reefs have already been destroyed,
and another 15% are on life support. The good news? Scientists are finding superhero corals
