Scandinavian Death Figures in Mythology

Did you know Scandinavia had its own Grim Reaper before the skeleton with a scythe?

In Norse myth, death was ruled by Hel, Loki’s daughter, a half-living,

half-dead figure who governed an icy realm for those who died of sickness or old age.

During the Black Plague, people feared Pesta, a hooded woman carrying either a rake or

a broom — a rake meant some survived, a broom meant none did. Scandinavia feared
