Segregation happens, even when no one explicitly wants it. Imagine a simple
neighborhood shown as a grid of blue and red dots. In this model,
every individual follows just one simple rule. I want a few neighbors like
me. Even thirty three percent is enough. If that mild preference is not
met, the person decides to move. This repeats as others across the
grid also seek their preference. But as they move, a surprising pattern
begins to emerge. No one asked for segregation, but the system created it anyway.
Small preferences create large patterns in housing, schools, and teams.
