Heinrich Schütz invented the ultimate Christmas soundtrack in 1664 and churches had no idea what
hit them. This German composer replaced boring spoken Gospel readings with a full theatrical
production where every Biblical character got their own signature sound. Angels entered with
shimmering violins, shepherds showed up with rustic recorders playing pastoral melodies,
and when the priests appeared, heavy trombones announced their authority.
Schütz color-coded the entire Nativity story through instruments, turning Luke and Matthew into immersive
audio drama. A tenor narrator guided listeners through the story in a singing style
