Seattle is doing something strange — parts of the city are sinking, while others are
rising. This isn’t bad construction. It’s the result of two massive forces fighting beneath
the city. During the last Ice Age, glaciers more than a mile thick crushed
the land beneath Seattle. When that ice melted, the ground began slowly springing
back up — a process called glacial rebound. Parts of the region are still rising today as the Earth
continues to recover from that ancient weight. But at the same time,
Seattle sits above the Cascadia Subduction Zone, where tectonic plates grind together.
That pressure actually forces parts of the coastline and city downward, causing slow sinking
