King Rama the Fourth of Siam actually offered to send a stock of elephants to the United States
during the American Civil War era. In 1861, the King wrote a letter—originally
intended for the President—proposing to ship breeding pairs to help develop the country's infrastructure.
He believed these massive animals could revolutionize American transportation and agriculture
by clearing jungles and hauling heavy loads. President Abraham Lincoln,
who received the letter after taking office, politely declined in 1862,
explaining that the American climate and steam power made elephants impractical. But he thanked the
King for the incredibly generous and thoughtful diplomatic gesture, which remains a unique highlight
