France and Spain finally lay down their arms. The Treaty of the Pyrenees ends the

conflict that had raged for almost a century. Territories change hands,

borders are redrawn — and to seal the deal, a royal marriage is arranged between

King Louis XIV of France and the Spanish princess Maria Theresa. Jump to 1867 — in Warsaw,

a baby girl is born, Marie Curie, the future discoverer of radioactivity, the woman who’ll

win not one, but two Nobel Prizes — the first person in history to do so.

Her research opens the door to X-rays, nuclear medicine, and a new understanding of matter itself.
