Silent Divorces and Lost Homes

My father sold my childhood home without telling me. I came back from college for winter

break and found strangers living there. He had moved into a smaller apartment

and just assumed I'd figure it out. No conversation. No heads up. I stood on that

porch with my suitcase feeling like an idiot. When I finally reached him he said he thought

my mom told me. They'd been divorced for five years. That's when I realized my parents never

actually communicated about me. I was just caught in the middle of their silence.

Spent that Christmas on a friend's couch trying to process that the house I grew up in was gone

and nobody thought I deserved to know.
