I heard the basement door slam shut behind me. Complete darkness. His footsteps creaked

on the stairs above. I felt along the cold concrete walls desperately searching for anything.

My hand touched a small window near the ceiling. I stacked boxes and climbed up,

squeezing through broken glass that sliced my arms. I didn't care. I dropped into bushes

outside and ran barefoot through the neighborhood screaming. A woman opened her
