Sloths can hold their breath underwater for up to 40 minutes, which is three times longer than dolphins
manage. This bizarre ability comes from their incredibly slow metabolism.
When a sloth submerges, it deliberately slows its already sluggish heart rate even further,
dropping from around 40 beats per minute down to just a handful. This dramatic slowdown means their body
needs far less oxygen, allowing them to stay beneath the surface for extended periods.
They use this skill when swimming between trees in flooded rainforests. While dolphins are
built for speed and need to breathe frequently to fuel their active lifestyle, sloths have mastered
the art of doing absolutely everything in slow motion, including breathing. Nature's laziest
