Sri Lanka is set to revolutionize its public transportation system by introducing a card-based bus
fare payment system starting November 24, 2025. Minister of Transport, Highways,
Ports, and Civil Aviation, Bimal Rathnayake, announced this initiative in Parliament,
emphasizing its role in modernizing public transport and enhancing commuter convenience. Passengers will be
able to use their bank-issued credit and debit cards to pay fares on buses equipped
with electronic ticket-issuing machines. This move is part of Sri Lanka's broader efforts
to transition towards a cashless society and improve the efficiency of public services.
By adopting digital payment methods, the government aims to enhance convenience for daily commuters
