In 1983, a Soviet officer got an alert that five US nuclear missiles were headed
straight for Russia. Protocol was clear: launch a full counterattack immediately. But Stanislav Petrov
paused. Something felt wrong. Why only five missiles? A real attack would send hundreds.
He broke protocol and reported it as a system malfunction. Turns out he was right.
Sunlight reflecting off clouds had fooled the satellite sensors. That single moment of doubt,
that gut instinct to question the technology, prevented nuclear war.
One man standing between ordinary life and total annihilation. His superiors later reprimanded him
for improper paperwork. He never received a medal. Petrov died in 2017, largely unknown.
