1. The 1800s: From Kings to Constitution Before 1809: Sweden had an absolute
monarchy. King Gustav IV Adolf made bad decisions—he refused to work with Napoleon,
went to war with Russia, and lost Finland to Russia in 1809. 1809 Revolution:
People were tired of the king’s failures, so he was kicked out. A new constitution
(1809) was created → it divided power between the king, the parliament, and the government.
Sweden became a constitutional monarchy (the king still ruled, but with limits).
New Royal Family: The king had no children, so Sweden picked a new heir: Jean
Baptiste Bernadotte, a French general. He became Karl XIV Johan. At first,
