Tagore: Creativity, Conscience, and Courage

Rabindranath Tagore grew up in a privileged Indian household, but he refused to let comfort dull

his conscience. A poet, philosopher, and educator, he believed that

creativity and compassion were inseparable. Writing in Bengali at a time when English dominated prestige,

he insisted on honoring local language and culture. In 1913, Tagore became the

first non-European Nobel Prize winner in Literature, bringing global attention to Indian

thought and spirituality. Yet he remained critical of nationalism when it turned rigid or violent.

After the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, he renounced his British knighthood in protest — a rare
