older sister, Emily Rose Carter, age 26. The message said: “He knows.
Don’t trust anyone.” Emily lived alone in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, just six miles from
my apartment. I called her immediately. It rang four times. Voicemail. At 12:06 a.m.,
there was a knock at my door. Two officers—Detective Mark Holloway and Officer Jenna Ruiz—told
me my sister had been found dead on the floor of her apartment bathroom. Time of death: 8:32
p.m. No forced entry. No signs of struggle. No murder weapon recovered.
