The Amazing Digestive System

Digestion starts in the mouth. Teeth chew food, and saliva begins breakdown.

Food travels down the esophagus via peristalsis, rhythmic contractions. In the stomach,

food mixes with gastric juices and enzymes. Proteins break down, forming a semi-liquid

mixture called chyme. Chyme enters the small intestine. Pancreas enzymes and liver bile act.

Tiny villi in the small intestine absorb nutrients into the bloodstream. Remaining material moves

to the large intestine. Water is absorbed. Leftover material is then formed into

solid waste. Finally, waste reaches the rectum and is eliminated,

completing digestion. Our amazing digestive system turns food into vital energy.
