Imagine a scene straight out of a medieval horror film. The year is 896
A.D. in Rome. Pope Stephen the Sixth, consumed by a posthumous
fury against his predecessor, Pope Formosus, decided to take extreme measures.
Unbelievable but true. Stephen the Sixth ordered the exhumation of Formosus' corpse
nine months after his death. The decaying body was dressed in pontifical vestments,
propped up on a throne in front of an assembly of terrified dignitaries. This became known
as the Cadaver Synod. For hours, the decomposing body was put on trial for fabricated
crimes. A terrified deacon, hidden behind the throne, was designated to
