The Chime Inside

Ever hear a sound you can’t place? A soft, single chime, like a notification,

but it’s never from your phone. It always starts late, when the house is

still. I’d check my laptop, tablet, every device. Nothing.

Then it got closer. From downstairs, then right outside my bedroom door. My heart would pound.

Last night, it woke me. The chime wasn’t outside. It was right beside

my ear. I felt a cold breath on my neck. The chime sounded again,

faintly, as if from *inside* me. Now, when you check your

phone for a notification... what if it's not yours?
