1816: “The Year Without a Summer.” Snow in New England in June, frost-killed crops

in Europe, the Thames frozen solid. History blames a volcano eruption

in Indonesia. But journals from the time describe a massive red comet hanging in the sky

for months, “standing still like a harbinger.” Temperatures dropped 20 degrees worldwide,

famines killed millions. What if the comet caused a pole shift or electromagnetic storm,

liquefying soil into the mudflood? Old almanacs call it “the year the sun was hidden,”

with auroras visible in the tropics. Survivors rebuilt on top of the buried world,

rewriting history to forget the catastrophe. Crop failures led to the orphan trains—repopulating the emptied lands.
