The Milky Way is our home galaxy, stretching over one hundred thousand light-years
across. It contains billions of stars orbiting a supermassive black hole known as
Sagittarius A-star. While spectacular, the heart of our galaxy is one of the
most dangerous locations in the universe. Stars are radiation engines. The more massive
they are, the more hazardous their radiation becomes. Powerful X-rays and gamma rays here
can damage cells and even be fatal to any visitor. Cosmic radiation particles
originate near the black hole, traveling at nearly the speed of light.
