As centuries passed, Christmas continued to evolve, often in unexpected ways.
In medieval Europe, it was not a quiet family holiday, but a noisy public affair filled with
days of feasting, heavy drinking, games, performances, and social role
reversals, including the appointment of a Lord of Misrule who symbolized controlled chaos during the
season. But not everyone approved. During the Protestant Reformation,
many reformers viewed Christmas as excessive, unbiblical, and dangerously pagan.
And in the 17th century, it was banned outright in parts of England and colonial America,
where celebrating it could result in fines or punishment. For a time, Christmas disappeared,
