Blockbuster had every chance to dominate streaming before Netflix existed. In 2000,
Netflix offered to sell for just 50 million dollars. Blockbuster laughed them out.
But here is the twist. Blockbuster actually launched their own streaming service in 2004.
They had the technology, the brand, and millions of customers.
But their CEO insisted on protecting late fee revenue. They refused to cannibalize their own
business model. Netflix was willing to lose money to capture the market.
The lesson? Disrupt yourself before someone else does.
