Blockbuster had everything. Aisles of movies, popcorn smell, Friday hunts. Dominating with 9,000
stores. Netflix offered partnership in 2000. Blockbuster laughed. Too comfortable with
late fees, too proud. Netflix bled money, but convenience would win.
Blockbuster built fortresses, ignoring the internet. By 2010, Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy.
Netflix, meanwhile, became worth billions. The lesson hits hard:
success makes you blind. What got you to the top becomes the anchor.
Blockbuster didn't fail at renting. They failed imagining a world where people wouldn't need
stores.
