Did you know the Great Wall of China is held together by breakfast?
It is true! During the Ming Dynasty, engineers created a super-mortar using sticky
rice soup. They mixed slaked lime with glutinous rice. The secret is
a unique carbohydrate called Amylopectin. This created a biochemical bond so strong that it
is literally earthquake proof. It is water resistant and so tough that weeds
cannot even grow through it. Even modern bulldozers struggle to break it!
But it was not cheap. The government took rice from farmers. This unfortunately caused
massive food shortages. Today, we still use this recipe to restore ancient monuments.
