The Heavenly King: Hong Xiuquan

1837. China. A scholar named Hong Xiuquan fails his imperial exams

for the fourth time. Broken and humiliated, he falls into a deep,

terrifying fever that lasts for days. In his delirium, he believes he ascends to the

heavens to meet his true family. He meets a man he calls the Heavenly Father,

who gives him a sword to slay demons. Hong awakens convinced he is the

younger brother of Jesus Christ, sent to save China. He destroys his

old life, preaching a new faith to the poor and the forgotten.

He promises a Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace, where land and wealth are shared.
