Haneda Airport, like everyone else on that humid July morning. But when she handed

over her passport, the officer froze. Across its navy cover, written in gold,

were the words: “Republic of Torenza.” The officer frowned. “Where exactly is that?”

The woman smiled politely and said, “Between France and Spain.” He pulled out a
