I spent years thinking octopuses were just weird sea creatures until I learned the truth.
They have nine brains! One central brain and eight mini brains in each
arm. Arms make decisions independently. A detached arm can even solve
a maze alone. They can edit their RNA to adapt to temperatures, something almost no
other animal can. Scientists believe this is why they never evolved into a dominant,
social species. They never pass knowledge to offspring. Every octopus starts from scratch,
relearning everything alone. Intelligence usually leads to civilization, but octopuses proved that being too
adaptable means being alone.
