In 1928, a bootlegger named Roy Olmstead got caught because police
wiretapped his phone without a warrant. The Supreme Court said it was totally fine because
they didn't physically enter his property. Wild, right? This case actually
legalized warrantless wiretapping for almost 40 years. Your private phone calls weren't protected
by the Fourth Amendment unless cops literally broke into your house. It wasn't until
1967 that this got overturned. Think about that. For four decades, law enforcement could
listen to anyone's conversations without permission, and it was completely legal. This one obscure
case shaped how privacy laws worked for generations. Now here's what blows my mind.
