The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, meaning coming or arrival.
Christians often observe Advent as a time of preparation for the first coming of Jesus Christ
at Christmas, and also for his promised second coming. Its roots extend
back to the early church. By the fourth and fifth centuries, Christians in Gaul
in Spain were dedicating time before Christmas for fasting, repentance, and preparation,
much like Lent leads up to Easter. Over time, this evolved into a more joyous season
of waiting and celebration, rather than strictly penitence. In Western Christianity, Advent begins on
the fourth Sunday before Christmas and lasts until Christmas Eve. That means some
