The Pass Where the Lights Went Out

The first rocket hit the lead vehicle. Then the rear truck exploded. The convoy was trapped

in complete darkness. Gunfire rained down from above, echoing through the pass and blinding

the soldiers. The radio operator tried calling for help — only static answered

back. Afghan fighters moved unseen, using the darkness as cover.

Weapons, ammunition, and supplies were seized. By dawn,

the pass was silent again. When reinforcements arrived, they found burned

trucks, scattered gear, and no sign of the attackers. Soviet reports called

it “a night engagement.” Locals call it “The Pass Where the Lights Went Out.”
