The Place Where Armies Disappear

As dust filled the air, the Mujahideen opened fire from the towering cliffs.

Their bullets rained down like a storm, and every echo made it impossible for the Soviets to locate

the shooters. Some soldiers tried to take cover behind rocks, but the valley was

too narrow. Others attempted to climb the steep slopes, only to be pushed

back by heavy fire. When a fuel truck was hit, flames shot upward, lighting the entire

gorge. The Soviets desperately radioed for help, but the mountains swallowed their

signals. No reinforcements… no escape. The Mujahideen quickly descended from hidden

routes. They captured ammunition, weapons, radios, and precious supplies.
