People love to imagine that samurai armor wasn’t made of steel because of some mystical craftsmanship
or sacred tradition — but the truth is far more practical: steel would have made the samurai
worse fighters. Leather, silk, and lacquered iron plates weren’t signs
of technological limitation — they were a deliberate choice to keep Japan’s elite warriors fast,
mobile, and lethal. Samurai combat wasn’t like the slow, plate-armored clashes
of medieval Europe. Battles in Japan relied on rapid movement, archery on horseback,
sudden charges, and close-quarters swordwork that demanded agility. A full steel suit
would have turned a samurai into a walking bell — heavy, clumsy, and slow to react.
